Decision Guide

Repair or Replace?

Should you repair or replace your air conditioner, heat pump, furnace, or boiler? When something breaks down, that quick-fix may seem the least expensive route now, but it may not offer the most value in the long run.

Energy Efficiency Modern systems reduce monthly power bills by 20–45%.

Repair History Frequent small fixes quickly exceed replacement ROI.
📅
Equipment Age Systems older than 12-15 years use phased-out components.
1

What type of equipment are you repairing?

Existing System: To help us with your evaluation, we need to know what type of system you have in your home. Air conditioners paired with furnaces have different lifecycle equations than packaged all-in-one outdoor units.
Air Conditioner or Heat Pump Central electric cooling & dual heating
Furnace or Boiler Gas or oil central heat combustion
Packaged System All heating & cooling in single outdoor footprint
2

What is the age of your equipment?

Equipment Age & Life Expectancy: Most equipment is designed for an average life expectancy of 15 to 20 years in standard climates, but extreme Texas heat often pushes compressors to failure between 10-15 years. Older units suffer clogged coils, lower SEER, and expensive refrigerant leaks.
Less than 6 Years
6 - 10 Years
11 - 20 Years
Over 20 Years
3

What is the estimated cost of needed repairs?

The 50% Rule: Repairing existing equipment can be a good decision as long as the cost of the repair is less than 30–50% of the cost of new equipment AND the rest of the unit is in solid condition. Otherwise, money is better invested in warranty-backed new equipment.
Less than $100
$100 - $500
$501 - $1000
Over $1000
4

Is the equipment still under warranty?

No / Warranty Expired
Yes (Parts or Labor active)
5

What is the SEER efficiency rating of your equipment?

Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio (SEER): SEER measures cooling output relative to electrical energy used. Older systems (8–10 SEER) cost double to run compared to today's 16–20+ SEER2 inverter heat pumps.

6

Type of refrigerant used?

R-32 / Puron Advance
R-410A (Phasing Out)

7

Has the air conditioner compressor been replaced recently?

No
Yes
5

What is the AFUE efficiency rating of your furnace?

Annual Fuel Utilization Efficiency (AFUE): Measures thermal combustion efficiency. High-efficiency furnaces rate 90–98% AFUE, meaning less than 10 cents per dollar is lost up the flue vent.
Over 90%
87 - 90%
80 - 86%
70 - 79%
6

Has the heat exchanger been replaced recently?

No (Original Factory Exchanger)
Yes
7

Does your equipment turn on and off repeatedly during the day?

No (Runs stable cycles)
Yes (Short cycles constantly)
8

Do you have problem rooms that seem to never get warm or cool?

No (Even balance)
Yes (Severe temperature swings)
9

Is system operation noticeable, disturbing, or causing vibrations?

No (Normal sound levels)
Yes (Loud hums, banging, or rattling)
10

How long do you expect to stay in this home?

Less than 2 years
2 - 5 years
6 - 10 years
Over 10 years
